All names must follow these DNS naming conventions:
Begin with a letter, and be followed by only letters, numbers, and hyphens,
End with a character or number
Contain only letters, numbers, and hyphens in between the beginning and ending character
Be case-insensitive
Element name length of 25 characters or less
Infrastructure name length of 50 characters or less
Not end in a hyphen followed by a number
Not contain a hyphen followed by the substring 'eth', followed by a number (not contain '-eth*' where * is a number)
Not match the DNS names of other devices in an infrastructure
Not contain the DNS name of any firewall defined in the farm
If the device is a firewall, not be a substring of the DNS names of other devices in the infrastructure
Users get DNS names when they are displayed in the dialogs
Users can change the DNS name of an element by renaming it in the Editor during Design state
Users can not create their own aliases - see Hostname
Users can not associate specific IPs themselves - see IP Addressing
Element name changes take effect in the Infrastructure Display Area after the configuration dialog closes
Names is too long to display will truncate and end in an ellipsis (...) to indicate there is more to the name
