Only a limited number of connections to a subnet can be made based on the range of available IP addresses in the subnet
IP addresses are external on the Internet subnet; all other subnets use internal IP addresses
If a server needs an external IP address, the user wires it directly to the external subnet
Multiple external subnets can be used if more than one is needed
