A Virtual Private Network, or VPN, enables companies to use the public Internet to deliver private information securely between internal offices and business partners, suppliers and vendors.
A VPN is useful for employees who need secure, private access to corporate data while working remotely in branch offices, at home, or on the road. Frequently, companies use a VPN to share critical information at great distances.
VPN solutions are based on hardware and/or software systems that enable the use of the Internet as the medium for transporting data. These systems use encryption and other security mechanisms to ensure that only authorized users can access the network and the data cannot be intercepted.
For VPNs, you can choose from different pre-packaged VPN solutions that best fit your needs. |
Notes:
1) Grid Operation will provision VPNs, but their management is the usually the infrastructure owner's responsibility.
2) To access a server inside the firewall via pcAnywhere or OpenSSH, the firewall must be configured to allow it.
